What are the symptoms of an undescended testicle.
Golden retriever puppy undescended testicle. Neutering a dog with retained testes is more complicated than the usual neutering because it involves locating and removing the testes from the inguinal canal or wherever in the abdomen they may be. In unilateral cryptorchids the right testicle is far less likely to drop than the left one. The second one has never been palpable.
Testicular torsion occurs when the testicle become entangled in the ligament. Undescended testicles a dog might be unilaterally cryptorchid with only one testicle descending or bilaterally cryptorchid whereby neither drops. In the majority of cases it concerns only one testicle.
In a puppy the testicles are found in the abdomen and gradually move down into place between 6 and 10 weeks of age. Occasionally dogs are born as monorchids meaning only one testicle developed. My vet has suggested he still be neutered but it would require exploratory surgery to find the second testicle.
Cryptorchidism from the greek crypto meaning hidden and orkhis or orchid meaning testicles is the medical term for the condition that occurs when one or both testicles of a male dog fail to descend into the scrotum. An undescended testicle is an abnormal position of the testis in animals mainly in dogs. The twisting cuts off the blood supply to the testicle causing intense pain.
Treatment of retained testicles in dogs the only treatment for both unilateral and bilateral cryptorchidism is surgically neutering your dog. Cryptorchidism otherwise known as undescended testicles undescended testes retained testicles or undropped testes is the condition whereby one or both of a male animals testicles fail to fully descend into the scrotal sac scrotum after birth. The undescended testicle is typically found outside the scrotum either up in the abdomen or in the inguinal canal where it may be palpated by the veterinarian.
The undescended testicle attaches to a ligament that in turn attaches to the dogs body wall. Veterinarians will monitor the situation closely because if left untreated undescended testicles have a more likely risk of developing tumors later on in life.
